Getting started

What is GRIOT?

GRIOT teaches Yorùbá through short audio lessons built for people in the diaspora: greeting your elders, introducing yourself and getting by with family. It also includes a translator for 14 languages, with unlimited free translations.

Do I need an account?

No. GRIOT has no accounts or sign-in. Your progress is saved on your iPhone.

I only want the translator. Can I skip the lessons?

Yes. On the first screen, tap Skip to translator. You can start the lessons later from the Learn tab.

Which languages can I learn?

Yorùbá today. Igbo and Hausa lessons are planned. The translator already supports Igbo, Hausa and 11 other languages.

Lessons and review

How do lessons work?

Each lesson introduces a few new phrases with audio, then practises them with five kinds of exercise: listen and choose, match pairs, build the phrase, fill the gap, and repeat after the speaker. Anything you get wrong comes back once at the end of the lesson.

What is the line under each phrase?

It’s the phrase’s tone pattern. Yorùbá is a tonal language: each syllable is high (á), mid (a) or low (à). The dots show where your voice should rise and fall. Tap the tortoise button to hear the phrase slowly.

How do I record myself?

In a “Say it out loud” exercise, tap the microphone, say the phrase, then tap again to stop. Play Native and You to compare. Recordings stay on your iPhone. If you can’t speak right now, tap Can’t speak right now to carry on.

Why are some lessons locked?

A lesson unlocks when you finish the one before it. The starter lesson and the first two course lessons are free; the rest need Premium.

What is the Review tab?

Review brings back phrases you’ve learned just before you’re likely to forget them. Phrases you remember come back less often; ones you miss come back sooner. New phrases are first due the day after you learn them. Your first review session is free; daily review is part of Premium.

Can I reset my progress?

Progress is stored only on your iPhone, so deleting and reinstalling GRIOT starts you from the beginning. Premium isn’t lost: tap Restore Purchases on the Premium screen after reinstalling.

Streaks and reminders

How do streaks and streak freezes work?

Meet your daily goal to keep your streak going. Every 7 days in a row earns a streak freeze (you can hold 2). If you miss a day, a freeze is used automatically so your streak continues.

How do I change my daily goal or reminder time?

On the Learn tab, tap the bell. You can choose 3, 5, 10 or 15 minutes a day, turn reminders on or off, and pick the time.

I’m not getting reminders
  1. Check reminders are on: Learn tab → bell → Remind me to practise.
  2. Check notifications are allowed: iPhone Settings → Notifications → GRIOT.
  3. GRIOT skips the reminder on days you’ve already met your goal.
  4. Open GRIOT once after changing settings so it can schedule the next week.

Translator

Is the translator really unlimited?

Yes. Translations are unlimited and free in Swahili, Yorùbá, Hausa, Igbo, Zulu, English and French. Premium adds Xhosa, Afrikaans, Amharic, Somali, Kinyarwanda, Arabic and Portuguese, plus conversation mode.

Why can’t I speak in Yorùbá?

Voice input uses Apple’s speech recognition, which doesn’t support Yorùbá, Igbo, Hausa or Zulu yet. Type in the box under the microphone instead. Voice input works in English, French, Arabic, Portuguese and Swahili.

What does “From GRIOT lessons” mean?

The phrase is one GRIOT’s lessons teach, so you’re seeing our checked, tone-marked Yorùbá rather than machine translation. Other results are marked “Machine translation · may not be exact”.

Premium and billing

What does Premium include?
  • Every lesson, plus new units as they’re released
  • Daily review
  • Conversation mode in the translator
  • 7 more translator languages

Premium is available monthly, yearly or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Prices are shown in your currency in the app before you buy.

How do I restore my purchase on a new or reset iPhone?
  1. Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you bought Premium with.
  2. In GRIOT, open the Premium screen: Learn tab → GRIOT Premium, or Translator → 7 more languages with Premium.
  3. Tap Restore Purchases.
How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple. On your iPhone go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions → GRIOT → Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid the next charge. You keep Premium until the end of the period you’ve paid for.

If you started a free trial, cancel before it ends and you won’t be charged.

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles all payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can’t issue refunds ourselves.

Can my family share Premium?

If Family Sharing is shown for GRIOT Premium on the App Store, family members in your Family Sharing group can use it. They open GRIOT and tap Restore Purchases.

Privacy

What data does GRIOT collect?

No personal information, and no account. Learning progress stays on your iPhone. GRIOT sends anonymous usage data (for example “a lesson was completed”) to help us improve the app. Read the full Privacy Policy.

How do I turn off usage data?

Translator tab → Settings (gear) → Privacy → Share anonymous usage data, tap to switch it off.

Troubleshooting

I can’t hear the audio
  • Turn up the volume. Lesson audio plays even with the silent switch on.
  • If you’re using Bluetooth headphones, check they’re connected.
  • Some phrases need an internet connection the first time they play.
The pronunciation doesn’t sound right

Some phrases currently use a computer-generated voice while we add recordings by native Yorùbá speakers. The written phrase and its tone marks are correct, so follow the tone chart. If something sounds especially wrong, email us the phrase and we’ll look at it.

The paywall says it couldn’t load the plans

Check your internet connection and tap Try again. If it keeps happening, make sure you’re signed in to the App Store (Settings → your name → Media & Purchases).

I found a mistake in the Yorùbá

Thank you. Please email the phrase, where you saw it, and the correct version. We check every report with native speakers.
